Paul and Allie, Founders of Subterranean Arts
Subterranean Arts is an arts development organisation, with a contemporary gallery and counter culture book emporium in the heart of the saints.
Since 2013, we have established ourselves as active innovators and supporters of the arts, in Ipswich and its surrounding areas.
We work with professional artists, alongside marginalised individuals and communities to exhibit and explore artistic expression.
Alongside our St. Peters Street Gallery, we also curate exhibitions at Ipswich Town Hall, in conjunction with the Borough Council and within Gainsborough Community Library.
Gainsborough, with its streets named after famous artists, has become a natural space for us, over the past few years, to engage the community in exploration of art through projects. We have established a regular summer arts project for young people and due to demand, are now hosting adult art classes.
Alongside visual arts, we host the bi-annual “Festival of the Beats” which is an alternative arts and literature festival, celebrating beatnik and counter cultures since the 1950's. We have been supported in this by The University of Suffolk, Kerseys Solicitors, Ipswich Film Theatre and other local businesses.
Moving into our current location from the Atrium Studios at UCS in 2014, has helped us expand, gain more independence, integrate with the waterfront community and offer unique opportunities to the people we work with, who may not have previously visited the saints and its eclectic mix of established boutiques and bistros.
Our newest venture is our Sub Arts program, on Ipswich Community Radio, every Saturday afternoon. Our programs unique off the wall approach to the arts scene, mixed with counter culture, music, literature and spoken word, has renewed a demand for our “Vagabonds Lounges” a platform for a variety of experimental performances. These lounges were originally a bi-product of the “Festival of the Beats” but have not been as frequent since we have had reduced access to venues.
As a charity, our long term goal is to establish a counter culture museum and gallery and are keen to hear from anyone who would like get involved or support us in any way.
